The City of Westminster is one of the two cities of London located to the west of the City of London, north of the River Thames and forms part of Inner London. It is a London borough that was created in 1965, achieving city status in 1540. Today's current population is 198,779 however other estimates now have it as 220,000. And it grows by the day. The City of Westminster contains the majority of the West End within its borders and is home to may buildings & businesses of important status and influential corporations. It houses the permanent headquarters of the United Kingdoms Government including the Palace of Westminster, Whitehall and the Royal Courts of Justice. Considering the vast space that is the City of Westminster, anywhere you wish to go within the City is accessible by at least 2 underground stations, mainline overland train stations, buses, and there are of course black cabs in the hundreds, if not thousands. From Mayfair to Covent Garden, Paddington to Soho, St James's to Chinatown and Oxford Street to Pall Mall - the City of Westminster has it all. The list of national landmarks, attractions, parks, museums, theatres and other places of interest simply goes on forever. Palaces include the one and only Buckingham Palace and its magnificent gardens, the Palace of Westminster (AKA the Houses of Parliament), St James's Palace, and its various residences and buildings, and Kensington Palace, the former residence of the late Princess Diana. Being home to the West End, some of London's finest landmarks are all within walking distance of each other and London's "theatreland", shopping-land, eating, drinking and entertaining lands are at your disposal day and night. Leicester Square and all it's entertaining, Piccadilly Circus, all the grand monuments of Trafalgar Square including Nelsons Column, the fabulous Covent Garden and all it's glory, The Strand, the National Gallery, the Royal Opera House, Big Ben, the stunning Westminster Abbey....and so it goes on. There are several road and foot bridges, crossing the River Thames, within the City of Westminster and they include Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge which links the Palace of Westminster to County Hall, and the self anchored Chelsea Bridge. These, along with their neighbours, are great to stroll across to see London from yet another point of view. And if you are simply in the mood for a leisurely stroll or perhaps a relaxing picnic, then the City of Westminster offers you some of the grandest and beautifully kept parks in the country. Hyde Park is incredible with a multitude of monuments and history lessons along the way, including the crazy Speakers Corner which is always entertaining. Green Park is located in Piccadilly and is spied by the lavish and famous Ritz Hotel. Kensington Gardens are lovely and the home to Kensington Palace, St James's Park is just to the east of Buckingham Palace and Regent's Park, another of the Royal Parks, is located in the northern section of the City of Westminster by the London Borough of Camden The City of Westminster is a tourist hot-spot. If you have a few days in London, take your time to walk around to explore as many of its treasures as you can.
